Some dentists are buying Halloween candy for $1 per pound. Your kid gets the money, and the candy gets sent to soldiers overseas. It's called -- wait for it -- Halloween Candy Buy Back. If you visit the site, you can enter your zip code to see if there are any dentists or orthodontists participating in the program.

A dentist in our city does that too and has been for a few years.
We have a lot of chocolate left this year from what we planned to give out. We didn't hve as many trick-or-treaters as usual. I would rather chop up the chocolate and use it in baking. We put it in chocolate chip cookies and brownies or as a topping for ice cream sundaes. As far as things my kids got, they went out and came home early and just put the things they can't eat back into our bowl for the trick-or-treaters and it already went to the older kids who ring the bell later. Therefore we had no leftovers that we didn't like. We only have to use up leftovers that we like.

We also trick or treated early then handed out candy later which got rid of about a third of it.
As for the rest, I told my kids they could eat as much as they wanted last night and today, then the rest would be thrown out tonight for trash pick-up in the morning. Neither are big candy eaters so this was a fairly safe bet which also didn't incite any rebellion or thwarting mom since they already had permission to gobble... they had some last night, some after dinner tonight and the rest is now gone. (I doubt they ate more than 8-10 pieces total between them both).

Our ortho. buys back candy and sends it overseas too! It is pretty awesome, but my kids refuse to sell it. They don't get a lot of sweet treats at home so this is their one time that I tell them to go crazy and eat it quick before Dad does!! :-)

This is a blog I read regularly, and she came up with a fabulous idea for leftover halloween candy: make it into a dessert!

I am lucky cause my daughter is having birthday soon and i am going to save it for her pinata. It was actually suggested by my 5 year old. I save some for after school snacks. (fruit snacks)

I'll have to hope they're doing this as my kid gets older. Currently he's five so I'm able to keep the amount of trick or treating down pretty small so we don't actually get too much candy over all. And then he gets a piece or two after dinner here and there, and it lasts for quite awhile. Last year's stash of candy lasted six months, and it wasn't even a pound.

DD didn't get too much this time around. It was rainy plus she wasn't feeling well. I don't think she has more than a pound herself. But, it is a cool idea! Thanks for sharing!

I have a friend who has convinced her daughter to use the candy to make a candy castle. They are using glue, so I think the plan is to make it inedible.
